A document checklist after a car accident

Keep one working folder for the crash, insurance correspondence, expenses and questions. This checklist helps you find information when someone requests it without guessing what proves your claim.

Start with the crash reference

Keep the report number, date and location together with the agency that responded. Add the insurance information exchanged at the scene and original photographs you already have. Ask the responding agency how to obtain the report. Gathering records should never require returning to an unsafe scene.

Make a correspondence log

For each insurer, record the claim number, adjuster name and official contact details. Save letters and messages with their dates. A short call note can say who you spoke with, the question asked, the answer and the next requested action. Mark uncertain information as uncertain instead of filling gaps from memory.

Separate bills from payments

Put invoices, receipts, estimates and payment confirmations in distinct groups. A bill records a charge; a receipt records a payment. Note the expense date and reason. Keep originals and add your own explanation separately. Ask the person reviewing your claim which supporting documents they need and how to send them securely.

Record time away from work

Keep the dates you missed, your usual schedule and any available employer correspondence. Save pay records that show the period involved. Self-employed people can organize canceled appointments, invoices and business records. These are preparation suggestions; an attorney or insurer can explain what documentation is relevant to your circumstances.

Share only what is requested

Use a verified insurer or attorney contact and ask for a secure upload method for private records. Do not send passwords or unrelated identity documents. The SettlementLift inquiry form does not ask for medical records, Social Security numbers or a complete case file. Keep those materials for the appropriate professional.
