How we research our resources

We preserve source evidence and distinguish verified findings, recommendations and information that remains incomplete.

On this page
  1. Government data
  2. Definitions matter
  3. Source discrepancies
  4. Legal and operational review

Government data

Research includes NHTSA FARS annual files for 2020–2024 and Census population estimates for the approved ten states and forty cities. Original data and derived measures remain distinct. The 2024 FARS release is an annual file, not labeled final in our research.

Definitions matter

Fatal crashes, total reportable crashes, vehicles and people are different measures. We do not substitute county numbers for city numbers or describe involvement as causation. Population estimates do not measure driving exposure.

Source discrepancies

The 2024 Texas source contains a one-crash difference between the printed San Antonio total and its severity categories. We preserve that discrepancy rather than adjust the source figures.

Legal and operational review

Legal periods, funding eligibility and insurance explanations require source and applicability review. Unverified operational spreadsheet notes are not treated as law.
