How much does a car accident lawyer cost?

There is no single fee that applies to every car accident case. Ask for the proposed fee agreement and a clear explanation of expenses before deciding whether to hire a lawyer.

Compare the whole arrangement

Ask how the fee is calculated, whether it changes at different stages of the case, and when payment is due. Ask which services the agreement covers and whether another lawyer or firm would be involved. A consultation and an agreement to represent you are separate steps; confirm whether the consultation itself has a charge.

Contingency fees and case expenses are separate questions

The ABA’s Model Rule 1.5 describes written contingency agreements that explain percentages, expenses and the order in which deductions are calculated. It also addresses expenses a client could owe without winning. These are model professional rules, not a substitute for the rules adopted in your state or your particular agreement.

Ask for a worked example

Ask the lawyer to illustrate the calculation using a hypothetical recovery, their proposed fee and estimated case expenses. Have them show what is deducted first and what would remain for you. Ask which other obligations could affect the amount you receive. Keep the example labeled hypothetical: it is an explanation of charges, not a prediction of a settlement.

Understand what happens if the case ends differently

Ask what you could owe if there is no recovery, if you decide to end the engagement, or if you later change lawyers. Ask how expenses are approved and whether you will receive updates as they accumulate. Have unclear language explained in writing before signing.

Use the same questions in each conversation

A useful comparison note records the proposed fee basis, separate expenses, scope of work, person handling the matter and communication arrangements. Do not assume the smallest advertised percentage produces the largest amount for you. Review the complete arrangement and the answers that matter to your circumstances.
