Video game addiction lawsuits: claims against Roblox, Epic Games and Microsoft
Families have sued game companies alleging that games such as Fortnite, Roblox and Minecraft were designed to be addictive to children. A federal panel twice declined to combine the cases into an MDL, so they are proceeding in individual federal courts and in a coordinated California state proceeding.

What is alleged
Plaintiffs allege that game design features, in-game purchases and reward systems were built to keep children playing, and that the companies did not warn parents. Named companies have included Roblox, Epic Games, Microsoft and Mojang. The companies deny the claims.
No federal MDL
The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation denied requests to create an MDL in 2024 and again in December 2025. That decision did not dismiss the cases; it means they proceed separately.
California coordinated cases
In 2025 California courts coordinated state cases as the Videogame Addiction Cases in Los Angeles. Related federal cases in Northern California selected pilot cases in 2026 to resolve early legal questions. No trial or settlement has been announced.
How gaming disorder is defined
The World Health Organization recognizes gaming disorder as a pattern of impaired control over gaming that takes priority over other activities and continues despite harm, usually over at least 12 months. A diagnosis is made by a clinician.

Deadlines
Each state sets its own filing deadline, and the clock often starts when you knew or should have known about the injury and its possible cause. Joining an MDL does not pause your state’s deadline, so ask a lawyer promptly if you are considering a claim.

Ask how the fee is calculated, which costs you could owe, whether your case would be filed in the MDL or in state court, and who will handle it day to day.
