Charleston truck accident resources and local records
After a truck accident in Charleston, start with your crash report, the truck’s operator and the local details that could help your attorney investigate. Here’s a practical place to begin.

Identify the terminal and the company moving the load
SC Ports publishes separate motor-carrier, terminal-map and traffic-safety resources, including gate procedures for Wando Welch and North Charleston terminals. These terminals serve the wider Charleston area; they are not all within Charleston city limits. For a port-related collision, save the terminal name, container and chassis identifiers if available, and the actual crash location.
SC Ports: Motor carrier resources ↗Identify the investigating agency
Charleston’s police FAQ directs report-copy questions to its Records Office and lists the incident information a requester should supply. Confirm the agency that investigated; Charleston city, North Charleston and Charleston County are not interchangeable record custodians or statistical areas. Keep any separate commercial-inspection reference with the crash report, and ask which agency holds supplementary vehicle or load records.
Charleston Police: Report request FAQ ↗Preserve information safely
Seek emergency help when needed and stay away from traffic, unstable cargo and hazardous spills. Keep original photos or video already in your possession, the crash reference, insurer letters and the tractor/trailer details you can identify from those records. Ask a lawyer promptly whether vehicle data, driver records, cargo documents or nearby video need preservation. Do not return to an unsafe scene or try to obtain private carrier records yourself.
Keep safety records and case value separate
A truck’s presence, a prior inspection, a route designation or a carrier identifier does not decide fault, coverage or settlement value. Ask a qualified attorney about the particular operator, trip, available insurance and deadlines. No single federal insurance figure applies to every truck or guarantees a recovery. If bills are difficult while a claim is pending, compare funding alternatives and written costs without assuming approval.
