Start with the investigating agency

Confirm the investigating agency and follow the current official crash-report access instructions. The sworn-statement form explains authorized access; do not assume every report is immediately public. Check current fees and access conditions through the official service before requesting a copy.

Know what coverage means

Insurance minimums, explained

Insurance language can feel like another problem to solve. Here is the starting point for a standard passenger-auto policy in Florida.

Bodily injury · one person

Generally not required

The injury liability limit for a single injured person.

Bodily injury · one accident

Generally not required

The injury liability limit shared across injured people in one crash.

Property damage · one accident

$10,000

For damage to other people’s vehicles or property.

These are minimum coverage requirements, not an estimate of your settlement. A policy may have higher limits. Special programs, commercial vehicles and the policy’s effective date can change the requirements.

Bodily injury liability is generally not required for ordinary registration. Special financial-responsibility requirements can apply. The two-year negligence period applies to claims accruing after March 24, 2023; older claims may follow earlier rules.

What about my medical bills?

The ordinary registration baseline includes $10,000 of PIP. Benefits have conditions and limits; initial care must occur within 14 days.

If the other driver has too little insurance

UM is optional. Check your policy for protection when the at-fault driver has no or insufficient bodily injury coverage.

How long do I have to file?

The general personal-injury filing period is 2 years. The claim type, accrual date and exceptions matter; government claims can require earlier notice. Have an attorney confirm your deadline.

A little clarity helps

Questions you may have

Does the minimum limit tell me what my case is worth?

No. It describes a coverage requirement. Injuries, responsibility, available policies and other facts affect what may be recoverable. Multiple injured people may share an accident limit.

Do I have to wait for a settlement to ask about medical benefits?

Your own policy may have benefits available before a liability claim settles. Ask your insurer which coverage applies, what records it needs and when you must give notice.

Can I request cash while my case is pending?

You can tell us about your case and the amount you need. Pre-settlement funding is separate from an insurance payment. Review any written offer’s costs, repayment terms and effect on the money you keep from your case.

What should I have ready?

Your crash date, insurance information, any claim number and your attorney’s contact details are useful starting points. If you have an attorney, including their information can reduce follow-up during review.

Crash statistics

2024 · NHTSA FARS first annual release

2,931Fatal crashes
3,138People killed
325Fatal crashes involving a large truck
What these figures mean

Our derived NHTSA FARS baseline records 2,931 fatal crashes and 3,138 people killed in Florida during 2024. Of those crashes, 325 involved a large truck. The truck figure is a subset of fatal crashes, not an additional total. These figures use the first annual release dated April 1, 2026; they do not count all injury or property-damage crashes.

Useful state resources

FLHSMV’s official report-request form identifies the Florida Crash Portal and asks for the crash date, report number when known and law-enforcement case reference. A live traffic-incident listing is different from a completed crash report or an annual statistical dataset.

Find help near you

Choose your city for local records, law firm resources and truck accident guidance.

Jacksonville

Truck-route system brochure

Jacksonville’s official truck-route brochure distinguishes preferred routes, restricted roads and other roads, and discusses delivery and pickup documentation. Its local regulated-truck definition should not be substituted for the national FARS large-truck definition. Save the exact road segment and any known trip origin or destination; ask about current route and delivery exceptions rather than assuming every truck on a residential road is prohibited.

Miami

Distinguish the tunnel from other port approaches

PortMiami describes a tunnel connecting the port with the MacArthur Causeway and I-395, with lane and cargo restrictions. For a port-related truck collision, record whether it happened inside the tunnel, at a portal, on the bridge or elsewhere. That distinction can help an attorney identify the relevant operator and incident records.

Tampa

Pin down the truck-route segment

Tampa publishes a truck-route map and related ordinance resources. For a route or turning question, save both cross streets, the direction of travel and any existing sign photographs. The map is dated background rather than live routing advice; ask which designation applied to the exact street and date of the collision.

Orlando

Downtown loading has its own permit trail

Orlando provides a downtown freight loading and unloading permit service for qualifying businesses and vehicles. For a collision involving a delivery at the curb, note the business entrance, loading location and time. Ask about the applicable loading authorization and nearby video; a loading permit is separate from a police crash report.

Get ready for your next conversation

Keep the report reference, insurance correspondence, expense records and questions together. Ask an attorney which filing periods and other deadlines apply to the particular parties and claim. A report request, insurance conversation or SettlementLift inquiry does not stop a deadline. For a truck crash, ask about the vehicle identifiers, carrier and any records that may need prompt preservation.

Need cash while your case is pending?

A pre-settlement cash advance may help with expenses while a case is pending. Start by telling us about your case and the amount you have in mind. Before accepting an offer, compare its written costs and repayment terms with your other options.
