Start with the investigating agency
SCDMV explains online, branch-office and mail requests using FR-50. An official copy must first be received and processed. Online access can be limited for an out-of-state license or missing customer number; check the official alternatives rather than assuming the report does not exist.

Insurance minimums, explained
Insurance language can feel like another problem to solve. Here is the starting point for a standard passenger-auto policy in South Carolina.
Bodily injury · one person
$25,000The injury liability limit for a single injured person.
Bodily injury · one accident
$50,000The injury liability limit shared across injured people in one crash.
Property damage · one accident
$25,000For damage to other people’s vehicles or property.
These are minimum coverage requirements, not an estimate of your settlement. A policy may have higher limits. Special programs, commercial vehicles and the policy’s effective date can change the requirements.
What about my medical bills?
Check your policy for medical payments benefits that may help with covered bills after a crash.
If the other driver has too little insurance
Uninsured motorist coverage is required at 25/50/25. Underinsured motorist coverage must be offered but is optional.
How long do I have to file?
The general personal-injury filing period is 3 years. The claim type, accrual date and exceptions matter; government claims can require earlier notice. Have an attorney confirm your deadline.

Questions you may have
Does the minimum limit tell me what my case is worth?
No. It describes a coverage requirement. Injuries, responsibility, available policies and other facts affect what may be recoverable. Multiple injured people may share an accident limit.
Do I have to wait for a settlement to ask about medical benefits?
Your own policy may have benefits available before a liability claim settles. Ask your insurer which coverage applies, what records it needs and when you must give notice.
Can I request cash while my case is pending?
You can tell us about your case and the amount you need. Pre-settlement funding is separate from an insurance payment. Review any written offer’s costs, repayment terms and effect on the money you keep from your case.
What should I have ready?
Your crash date, insurance information, any claim number and your attorney’s contact details are useful starting points. If you have an attorney, including their information can reduce follow-up during review.
Crash statistics
2024 · NHTSA FARS first annual release
What these figures mean
Our derived NHTSA FARS baseline records 948 fatal crashes and 1,038 people killed in South Carolina during 2024. Of those crashes, 125 involved a large truck. The truck figure is a subset of fatal crashes, not an additional total. These figures use the first annual release dated April 1, 2026; they do not count all injury or property-damage crashes.

SCDPS lists annual Traffic Collision Fact Books, including 2024. Use the year and table definition printed in the book when interpreting a number. A collision summary for a county is not the same as a city count, and the national series below covers fatal crashes only.

Columbia
Ask about truck data beyond the police report
Cavanaugh & Thickens’ Columbia truck-accident resource discusses gathering vehicle data as part of an investigation. A useful consultation question is which electronic records might exist for this truck and who should preserve them. This is an educational resource from a law firm, rather than an official agency record or a ranking of attorneys.

Identify the terminal and the company moving the load
SC Ports publishes separate motor-carrier, terminal-map and traffic-safety resources, including gate procedures for Wando Welch and North Charleston terminals. These terminals serve the wider Charleston area; they are not all within Charleston city limits. For a port-related collision, save the terminal name, container and chassis identifiers if available, and the actual crash location.

Keep Upstate regional studies separate from your street
SCDOT’s May 2026 announcement describes a freight and travel study covering selected roads in Greenville and Spartanburg counties. Its study area extends beyond Greenville city. Use the publication as regional background, then bring the exact road segment, travel direction and any warehouse entrance involved to your attorney. The announced survey period has ended.

Prepare a focused first conversation about the truck
Joye Law Firm publishes a Myrtle Beach resource for collisions involving commercial trucks and tractor-trailers. Before a consultation, organize the crash reference, the carrier name and what you already know about the vehicle. Ask who would handle the investigation and what additional records may be needed. The firm’s page is an educational starting point, not an endorsement or a case-value estimate.

Keep the report reference, insurance correspondence, expense records and questions together. Ask an attorney which filing periods and other deadlines apply to the particular parties and claim. A report request, insurance conversation or SettlementLift inquiry does not stop a deadline. For a truck crash, ask about the vehicle identifiers, carrier and any records that may need prompt preservation.
Need cash while your case is pending?
A pre-settlement cash advance may help with expenses while a case is pending. Start by telling us about your case and the amount you have in mind. Before accepting an offer, compare its written costs and repayment terms with your other options.
